Groupware - The Changing Environment

1.1 What Does Groupware Really Do?

First and foremost, groupware supports the efforts of teams and other paradigms which require people to work together, even though they may not actually be together, in either time or space. Groupware maximizes human interaction while minimizing technology interference. The following graphic provides a view from both the technology and human interaction perspectives.

Figure1.1

The organization of this chapter follows this diagram. It starts with the technology issues (networks and infrastructure) and builds to discussion of collaborative products and taxonomy which classifies this rapidly expanding industry. We then move to the application of these products, supported with case studies, and finally discuss how groupware can support organizations in the future through de-engineering and/or knowledge management. This chapter is intended to provide readers a broad base of information regarding groupware technologies and strategies.
